With less than two weeks before the election the two candidates for Atlanta mayor are stepping up their campaigns and their fundraising. There are several hot-button issues that are likely to bring voters to the polls. One of them is how to help the city deal with the rising number of abandoned houses and the crime they breed. "25 years ago, this is where my children played," said longtime West End resident Diane Trimble.

I think first of all we need to move code enforcement into the police department   -Kasim Reed

It was Monday night and a standing-room crowd (some sat on the floor) of more than 100 people gathered at a meeting near Piedmont Park. The audience included Liz Coyle and Alex Wan, the two candidates campaigning to represent the area on the city council. Standing in the back was Clair Muller, candidate for council president. Amir Farokhi, who's battling Aaron Watson for a citywide seat on the council, found a spot on one side near a large potted plant.

We can do much better in six   -Kasim Reed

In a mayoral race between a black man and a white woman, it seems obvious that race is bound to be a factor. Much less obvious is the sizable role that sexual orientation and gender identity is likely to play in the Dec. 1 runoff between Kasim Reed and Mary Norwood. Already long known for intense political activism, Atlanta's LGBT community has been newly energized by the events of the last year.

Atlanta mayoral candidates said Wednesday that they are concerned about the new crime spree in Midtown and are vowing to keep repeat offenders in jail. Atlanta police report vehicle break-ins are up 250 percent in the past three weeks. Police recently arrested 48-year-old Adolphus Thomas in connection with two of the break-ins.

We need to do an analysis of all the different facilities that are in the city, whether the city jail, the Fulton County facility, other facilities that I’m hearing about that are here   -Mary Norwood

As Atlanta struggles with shrinking revenue and a sluggish economy some are looking at a new approach in an old fight -- extending bar hours. This comes as the group Metropoll surveyed meeting planners nationwide who gave Atlanta low marks for it's lack of nightlife. It doesn't surprise Michael Benoit who owns The Vortex Bar and Grill.

We have since gotten a reputation as being a boring city because the 4am bar closing was one fothe few things that gave us the competitive edge   -Michael Benoit
